Dim Sum at Sun Sui Wah Restaurant, Vancouver, BC

Eating Brunch, Chinese Style

The morning after we arrived in Vancouver, BC, Canada, we went out for dim sum brunch at Sun Sui Wah Chinese Restaurant. It is located at the corner of Main Street and 23rd Avenue East.

The restaurant has an unusually large parking lot for Vancouver, with three levels of parking located at the back of the restaurant.

The lobby is large and airy

Dim Sum literally translated means "touching your heart" - that the food is so good and tasty that your heart is touched.
Dim Sum is prepared into bite size portions, using different types of meat, such as chicken, pork, beef, shrimp, and duck. Many are dumpling-like, with meat covered in a wraps made up of different grains, such as rice and wheat. The most well-known types are Har Gow, which are steamed shrimp dumplings and Sui Mai, which are steamed pork dumplings.

Har Gow

Sui Mai
(before I could take a photo, my husband had already eaten one!)

Woo Tau Kau
Taro Dumpling - Crispy deep fried taro root potato stuffed with pork and vegetables.

Lo Mai Gai
Steamed lotus leaves stuffed with sticky rice and chicken

Xiao long bao
This dumpling has ground pork and soup enclosed in the wrap so that you get an extra juicy bite. The ones served at this restaurant were not as tasty as some that I have tried before. I would skip this dish here.

Goon Tong Gao
This dim sum is considered a specialty dim sum, where the dumping is cooked in an individual bowl in a tasty soup. The meat can be chicken, pork, or seafood. This soup is my favorite dim sum dish. It's more expensive, but it's so yummy!

We are visiting more restaurants on our trip. Stay tuned!
